Morris Kliphuis & Joanna Duda – Wake The Dead
Wake the dead
In Wake The Dead, pianist Joanna Duda (PL) and French horn virtuoso Morris Kliphuis (NL)
create a musical world, full of hypnotic, soft textures, restless ostinatos, all interwoven with the unique sound of Baroque instruments.
Duda and Kliphuis met for the first time at the Sound Out residency in Sokołowsko (PL), where they bonded over their love of free improvisation, obscure electronics, and a shared
background in classical music. Wake the Dead grew out of this bond and they have developed the work in a series of residencies in Katowice (PL), Berlin (DE) and The Hague (NL).
After recording many hours of improvisations, they are slowly turning these into compositions.
As the project progresses, they will invite a handful of prominent Baroque string players to join the process, and together they will investigate how historic ways of playing, hearing and thinking can find a place in a contemporary context.
Their aim is to create a set of concert music that draws from the old as well as the new, and which allows the listener to experience time and history from a refreshing, non-chronological point of view.
